From the humble dawn of this country, when our ancestors forded wild rivers and journeyed through untouched forests, building homesteads and settlements with their families and friends; apple cider warmed their hearts and minds and spirits. Apples were valued as a harvest that brought joy and merriment, good health and good cheer. No other fruit – and no other beverage – has played such an important role in the formation and identity of America. The first apple orchard was planted in Boston in 1623. By 1767, residents of Massachusetts were consuming an average of 35 gallons per person annually. When running for Virginia state legislature, George Washington offered 3 gallons of cider to every voter. Today however, hard cider is virtually unknown, often confused with apple juice and sweet cider; a tragedy and an offense to our heritage.

At Carlton Cyderworks, we strive to rectify this injustice.

Using the finest traditional cider apples, and paying attention to every detail, we craft approachable yet refined cider; beverages that honor and respect their historical origins. We also respect our customers, and so we create modern blends and flavors that remain true to our ideals. The contents of each bottle are created through a meticulous process in which the fruit is handpicked, crushed, fermented, and bottled – every step accomplished by the labor of our three founders. This allows us to ensure the quality of our cider. We hope you actively enjoy the rebirth of this refreshing American drink.

Slake Your Thirst!

Hopworks Urban Brewery is Portland’s first Eco-Brewpub. We offer handcrafted organic beers and fresh, local ingredients, all served in a sustainably built and operated building with a relaxed, casual atmosphere. Brewmaster Christian Ettinger spent a year and half constructing this “dream brewpub.”

HUB incorporates many aspects of sustainability. From composting to rain barrels, and from pervious pavers to hand dryers, we have made every effort to protect “our” future with a thoughtful alternative. Hopworks is 100% renewably powered and “cradle to gate” carbon neutral.

Our 20-barrel brewery produces 6,000 barrels a year and provides our restaurant with ten different HUB organic beers on tap and two cask ales at all times. We have four distinct dining areas including a family friendly restaurant with play area, a vibrant bicycle bar, banquet mezzanine, and outdoor beer-garden. We also have parking for up to sixty bikes, so ride on in.

Our wonderful beer, food, and staff are some of the best you will find anywhere. Relax, raise a pint and enjoy living with purpose.

Cheers!

The Old St. Francis School, conveniently located in the center of downtown Bend, has undergone a transformation from 1936 Catholic schoolhouse to lively destination hotel complete with classrooms-turned-lodging rooms, a pub, brewery and bakery, a movie theater, private meeting and event space and a truly fantastic soaking pool that beckons day travelers, shoppers, hikers, skiers and snowboarders alike

The Old St. Francis School was named a Conde Nast’s Readers’ Choice Award Winner for 2009 Best Small Hotels! Thanks to all who voted for us!

We offer 19 richly appointed guestrooms and four individual rental cottages with room for 2 to 10 people, perfect for group getaways. Old St. Francis School reopened in its current capacity in November 2004 and we honor the property’s former life by featuring extensive artwork that pays homage to the history of the school and the surrounding community.
